If you could change only one thing about how you study, this would be it. Decades of controlled experiments point to the same conclusion: the act of pulling information out of your head teaches you far more than putting it in again. Psychologists call it the testing effect, or retrieval practice. Most students have never been taught it.
The experiment that should change how you study
In a now-classic 2006 study, Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students learn passages, then either re-read them or test themselves on them. On a test five minutes later, the re-readers did slightly better — which is why rereading feels so reassuring. But on a test a week later, the students who had practised retrievalremembered dramatically more. The short-term comfort of rereading is a trap; the long-term payoff belongs to recall.

A large 2013 review by John Dunlosky and colleagues graded ten popular study techniques. Highlighting, summarising and rereading — the things most students actually do — scored low. Practice testing scored as one of the two highest-utility strategies available. The evidence is not subtle.
Why does retrieval work so well?
Pulling an idea back from memory does three things that rereading cannot:
- It strengthens the path. Each successful retrieval makes the memory easier to find next time, like wearing a trail through grass.
- It tells you the truth. When you can't recall something, you find out now — while there is still time to fix it — instead of in the exam.
- It builds flexible understanding. Retrieving an idea in a new context links it to more cues, so you can use it on problems that don't look exactly like the ones you practised.
Reading your notes is recognising the answer. Recalling without them is producing the answer. Only one of those is what an exam asks you to do.
How to practise retrieval (the right way)
- Close the book first. Read a section, then look away and write or say everything you can remember. Check afterwards.
- Ask questions, not summaries. Turn each heading into a question — "What causes X? How do I solve Y?" — and answer from memory.
- Make it a little hard. If recall is effortful, it is working. Easy review feels nice but teaches little.
- Space it. Retrieval plus spacing is the most powerful combination in the research — far stronger than either alone.
